Cobo Center
Located along the Detroit riverfront and home to the annual North American International Auto Show, Cobo Center is the region’s premier convention facility. Cobo Center is conveniently located near dozens of hotels and restaurants, the Renaissance Center, and is accessible to the Detroit People Mover transit system.
Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano has been the region’s leading advocate for the renovation and expansion of Cobo Center. He led the effort to form the Detroit Regional Convention Facility Authority (DRCFA), formed in September 2009. The Authority brought together the State of Michigan, the City of Detroit, and Oakland and Macomb Counties to share control and management of Cobo Center. With the establishment of the Authority,
the process of renovating and expanding Cobo Center has begun.
Executive Ficano views Cobo Center as a “front door” to the region along with Detroit Metropolitan Airport. Expansion plans announced in June 2010 promise to improve efficiency while adding strategic convention space. Executive Ficano believes the expansion of Cobo Center is a significant step in securing the economic future of Wayne County and the region, and he views the establishment of the Convention Authority as a basis for greater regional collaboration.
